The Case of the Vanishing Fishhook (Hank the Cowdog 31)
Published in Paperback by Puffin (January, 2000)
Average review score:

The Funny BookThe best mysterious book I ever read.Full of laughter.Great book for kids under 14.I wish there was more characters.
Critique of The Case of the Vanishing FishhookI liked the book, The Case of the Vanishing Fishhook, because it was funny. One of the funniest parts of this book was when Hank, the cowdog, ate the soap. Hank had swallowed a fishhook. Then he swallowed soap to help him spit the hook out. This is the funniest "Hank" book written by John R. Erickson. I give this book a five-star rating and I recommend that you read it immediately!
I couldn't put it downThis book is very good because Hank go's fishin' with little Alfred and gets very mad at Drover because he eats the bait and while hank was yelling at Drover Hank found some of the bait and ate it. To find out if there was a fishhook attached to it read the book.

Companions of the Blest
Published in Paperback by Eakin Publications (October, 2002)
Average review score:

Companions of the BlestJim Boyd has captured the essence of the people that live on the land in the Texas Hill Country better than any other. His descriptions of this wild, and still untamed part of Texas, put me right out there in the that magical country right along with the characters in the story. I had trouble putting the book down because I longed so much for Mac Taylor and Rene to ride off in the sunset together - unfortunately this was not to be. A really great read. In the past I have been blessed to know many Mac Taylors, my own father was indeed one of them. The author is most correct on this point: the Mac Taylors of the world are disappearing from my own personal view, and I doubt seriously that I'll see many more like them in this lifetime.
Get this book; you'll enjoy it.Companions of the Blest was my favorite book this year. The characters were believable and likeable. It's a very interesting story and one I didn't want to end.
As Good As WillieCompanions of the Blest captures the essence of Texas culture. Reading the book is every bit as good as attending a concert by Willie -- or Ray Price.
The culture portrayed in the book endures in spite of increasing urbanization. Hopefully, the spirit of Mac Taylor and Juanita Navarro will remain a part of who we are and what we stand for.
I greatly enjoyed the book, and I'm buying copies for friends.

Honor's Disguise (Rocky Mountain Legacy Series, No. 4)
Published in Paperback by Bethany House (November, 1999)
Average review score:

wonderful, the best book next to the bible.I think this is the best book, but I realy wish monte did not die. I think she should write another book to the series, and have monte not realy be dead, and have it turn out that he realy was just badly injured and before they put him in the dirt a native american came and grabbed him and patched him up but lost his memory. So Abbie falls in love with cole and gets married, and so monte comes home after a few months they've been married, with his memory back, and abbie has to choose between them........you could finish the rest kristen if you decide to use my idea in another rocky mountian legacy. Keep up the good work, and GOD BLESS YOU! P.S Keep me informed please!
Please keep wring this series, Mrs. Heitzmann!I just wanted to say that I love this series! It has quickly become a favorite of mine and I hope you will continue writing on Abbie's story! I can hardly wait for HONOR'S REWARD to come to one of our local bookstores. I couldn't even put the books down because they made me want to know what would happen next. Thank you for writng such wonderful books!
Another winner by Kristen Heitzmann! This book is great! Kristen Heitzmann obviously has talent in writing historical fiction. The plot was great and characters unique and realistic. Abbie has finally started getting over her loss as her former foreman Cole Jasper returns and brightens up the atmosphere around her Lucky Star Ranch. Then out of the blue 2 bounty hunters came and took Cole saying that he is wanted dead or alive for the murder of a saloon girl in El Paso, Texas. Abbie knows it couldn't be Cole who killed the girl because it isn't in him to murder. But Cole is not denying the charges and has the look of a guilty man. Abbie decides to go after the bounty hunters and save Cole from a certain death. Will she be able to find the truth before it's too late? Great story and plot. I can't wait to see what's next in this series!

I was amazed at the content! This book teaches numbers, animals, colors, shapes, and opposites! Quite a bit of information packed into one book! AND it is fun! My daughter loves lift-the-flap books! This one goes with her Fisher Price Barn, too. She matches the animals in the book to the ones on her farm... Great activity book!
BUY THIS BOOK!!My 2 year-old adores this book! The educational value is tremendous. The book is appealing to a wide range of developmental levels, as well. The companion school bus book is also a favorite in our home. I hope more books are planned for this wonderful series!

Nightland
Published in Paperback by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (October, 2001)
Average review score:

A Storm Out Of The WestBilly Keene and Will Striker, the main characters of Louis Owens' novel Nightland, are half-breed Cherokees living on failing ranches in New Mexico that their grandparents bought from the Mexican-Americans whose family had a grant from Spain [who took the land from Native Americans in the first place]. They're out hunting deer when a man [who we find out is of Pueblo Indian blood] falls from the sky and ends up skewered on a juniper tree. A suitcase full of money falls with him. Despite misgivings, Billy and Will keep the money. Then all hell breaks loose. Nightland is at heart a thriller, but as with Owens' other novels, it is also a musing on identity. Native American spirituality and the supernatural play a key role in the novel, so if suspension of disbelief is a problem for the potential reader, don't start this book. This is a much faster read than Bone Game and The Sharpest Sight. I found Nightland to be one of the highlights of my summer reading. Oh, and as if my opinion actually counted, I think Richard Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino should buy the rights to Nightland and make a movie. One of the pieces of sad news from this summer was that Louis Owens had taken his own life. He left us five great novels, including Nightland.
A Great Book!A body falls from the sky in the dry New Mexico wilds. Two native American ranchers sight the mysterious image and set off to find it. Nearby to the body impaled in the limbs of a tree, they find a suitcase full of money.
This could be their lucky break, or their worst nightmare. They decide to risk keeping the money -- and to face the inevitable consequences . . .
The native American insights are a delight to read. Louis Owens's beautifully crafted prose leaves a last impression.
"A well-wrought thriller" says Publisher's WeeklyOwens' third American Indian crime thriller has received praise from Kirkus, Publisher's Weekly, Booklist and others. The consequences of trying to keep found money (in this case, $850,000 dropped from a drug dealer's plane in remote New Mexico) take ranchers Will Striker and Billy Keene on a wild ride. Enter sex and magical realism, stir, and find yourself reading a "well-wrought thriller capped by a twist-filled climax."

The Case of the Double Bumblebee Sting
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Average review score:

Doggone good BookHaving been born and raised on a cattle ranch(not in Texas however)there is so much to relate to in the Hank books, we have rattlesnakes too, and learn to look very carefully before reaching for anything lying around in the summertime. My 8 year old loves me to read the Hank books to him,(I do a real good Drover) soon we both become part of the story, and lose track of time. Even if you've never had a cowdog, or lived on a ranch, you'll love this book, but if you have, you'll be hooked for life on Hank the Cowdog! We are.
The best book everI would recommend Hank the Cow Dog Case of the Double Bumblebee Sting because it's funny. Hank thinks two bumblebees have bitten him but it ends up that it was a rattlesnake. His face swells up like a balloon. He says, "It weighs 250 pounds". Drover keeps on saying that it was a rattlesnake, but Hank will be Hank - stubborn as a donkey. Hank keeps on saying, "it was 2 bumblebees in that pipe". Drover just goes with the flow and says "OK". I recommend this book to you and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Matthew Jacobs's Hank the Cowdog's Bee Sting ReveiwThis book is about a dog named Hank. Hank lives on a ranch, and is head of ranch security. Drover is another dog that live on the ranch. In this book Hank gets bit by a rattlesnake, but he thinks it's a bumble bee. Sally May his owner takes him to the vet to get a shot. In the end Hank finally get's better. I reccomend this because it's funny and thrilling to read.

Easy ReadJoyce Gibbons displays her imagination in her colorful discriptions and twisted plot in her debut novel "Home On the Ranch." Gibbons makes it easy to picture her setting with her attention to detail. This won't be the last we see of this author.

Home on theRanch was a great book!!Home on the Ranch was a great book. The author allows you to visualize the story as if you were in it. The story line being a romance and a mystery gives the book a special twist. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes to read.
True to LifeI throughly enjoyed Home On The Ranch. As a new author I think Ms. Gibbons is off to a good start with her first novel. I would like to read more of her work. The book was down to earth with great characters and a plot that kept me interested. I could relate to the heroine. I also could picture the ranch in my mind because of the wonderful descriptivies in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good read.

Maisy at the Farm
Published in Hardcover by Candlewick Press (October, 1998)
Average review score:

Can't get enough of this one!My eighteen month old son loves this book! He goes to bed with it at night and wants to read it more than any other book. He can maneuver the flaps and pull- tabs without ripping them to shreds (like some others he's managed to destroy.) We highly recommend this one!
Bought a second when the first was worn out! This book has been fantastic, and has introduced our daughter to all the farm animals in such a way that they've really become her friends - there are eggs under the laying hen, and then a chick appears too, there is a bird sweeping out from the corn as the tractor chugs by; the geese need water from the yellow watering can, and a very young child can add to the story by activating the animals at different points - magic. We started our daughter on this at 3 months, as a reading book, and now, 13 months later, the second copy is a wreck - she can do each step again, and again, and again.......a worthwhile buy anyday, and a marvellous present (needless to say, for adults too!)
My son loves this book!My 14-month-old has just learned how to express a preference for some books over others, and this book is the big winner. He loves it more and more as he figures out how to pull all the tabs.

The Milk Makers
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Average review score:

MILK MAKERSI understand why this was a reading rainbow book. It is a great experiment activity non-fiction book. This book exaplins how milk is processed. Most children most likely think that the milk in the fridge comes from the store. What they may not realize is that it comes from a farm miles away. This book goes into great detail how milk is made, and the makeup of cattle. it also gives brief descriptions of variuos types of cattle and dairy products. The illustrations use labels and bright colors. I think this is a good non-fiction book for children. It is in a language that they understand and it is easily read. The book is also very accurate as are all, her books. Gibbons was raised on a dairy farm and has made numerous trips to the dairy farm.
In close this is a good book for children, especially for a science unit. I would have this in my classroom library for childen to perhaps complete a report about milk or other products. Gibbons has a great series on the way variuos things are made.

Excellent resource book on farming and dairy productionThis book is highly enjoyable and informative for children, and I think that every child with an interest in farming would be happy to own a copy. I strongly recommend this book to parents everywhere!
Excellent book!this was such a great story for our kids to read - we live near a dairy farm and this book gave them a lot of insight into the real working of a dairy farm - it answered a lot of their questions and ours too! We love this book!
